Love Your Heart Week

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. To prevent heart disease and increase awareness of its effects, FCEC is participating in American Heart Month and is inviting you to check the Council on Aging out during Love Your Heart week, February 11-15, and start taking advantage of the heart healthy services. In addition to fitness classes, water aerobics, and a heart-healthy lunch daily, a variety of events, guest speakers, and demonstrations will take place throughout the week at the Petoskey Friendship Center:
     Tai Chi Demonstration - Designed to promote a healthful state of being at any age, a Tai Chi demonstration will take place on Monday, February 11 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to participate in this Wang and Yang Style method presented by Alta Roy.
     Drum Aerobics - Come join the fun and do something good for heart on Tuesday, February 12 at 10:30 a.m. If you can clap your hands, you can participate in this free class led by Lynn Turner, Executive Director of Northern Michigan Drum Village.
     Heart Innovations Presentation - Dr. Jason Ricci, a Michigan Heart and Vascular Specialist from McLaren Northern Michigan, will speak about Heart Innovations on Tuesday, February 12 at 12:30 p.m.
     FREE Blood Pressure Screening - Getting a blood pressure check is a simple step to take for heart health. On Wednesday, February 13, the Council on Aging will offer a free blood pressure check for all adults age 18 and over from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. No appointment is necessary.




Free Hearing Testing
If you have been experiencing hearing loss, please make an appointment to get your hearing checked. Free hearing tests will be offered for persons age 55 and older at the Petoskey Friendship Center on Wednesday, February 13 beginning at 9:00 a.m. An Audiology Technician from Petoskey Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists will be conducting the tests. Appointments are necessary for this free service and can be made by calling (231) 347-3211 or (888) 347-0369.

Entertainment
Brad Hersey will be performing during lunch at the Huber Senior Center in Brutus on Wednesday, February 13 beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Ping Pong
The Ping Pong tables will be set up for play at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 7; Wednesday, February 13; Thursday, February 14; Wednesday, February 20; and Thursday, February 21; and at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 27. Join the fun at the Petoskey Friendship Center.

Protecting the North Country You Love
Learn more about the Little Traverse Conservancy on Wednesday, February 13. LTC's Director of Communications Anne Fleming will be sharing information about this non-profit organization. Learn about the voluntary tools landowners can use to keep their land undeveloped forever. Find out more about local trails that are open and available year-round. Receive maps of the most popular nature preserves for hiking and other outdoor activities. Join us for lunch at the Petoskey Friendship Center prior to the presentation which will take place at 12:30 p.m.

Valentine's Luncheon
Celebrate Love Your Heart week with a Valentine's Luncheon on Thursday, February 14 at the Petoskey and Pellston Friendship Centers. This special heart-healthy lunch is served at noon and will feature dijon pork chops, oven roasted redskin potatoes, and tomato peach salad.

Reading and Discussion Group
Come in out of the cold and join discussions that are sure to enlighten you. Pamela, a retired art teacher and librarian, will lead a Senior Reading and Discussion Group. Meetings take place on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at the Petoskey Friendship Center library. Consider coming for a hot lunch at noon before the meeting.

Exercising in Cold Weather
Physical Therapist Andrea Ancel from Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center will share safety tips for exercising outdoors on Wednesday, February 20 at 12:30 p.m. at the Petoskey Friendship Center.

Entertainment
Join us at the Petoskey Friendship Center for entertainment by Stu Fenton and Sal Page on Thursday, February 21 beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Movie and Popcorn
FCEC Theater presents The Stray on Wednesday, February 27 at the Petoskey Friendship Center. The movie starts at 1:00 p.m. and is about how a young boy brings a stray dog home and in just a short time brings comfort to the struggling family. Movie and popcorn is free to those age 60 and older.

Hearing Aid & Eyeglass Cleaning Clinics
If your eyeglasses and/or hearing aids need cleaned, checked, or adjusted, bring them in to our Hearing Aid and Eyeglass Cleaning Clinic on Thursday, February 28 at the Petoskey Friendship Center. Opticians from Professional Optical will be available to service your eyeglasses from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Audiology Technicians from Petoskey Ear, Nose, & Throat Specialists will be available to clean and check your hearing aids from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

St. Patrick's Day Senior Home Crawl
Tour senior housing options in a fun and relaxed setting on Thursday, March 14. Appetizers, special beverages, and information packets will be served at each stop: American House Senior Living Communities, Independence Village, and The Residences at Harbor Watch. Transportation will be provided. Sign up is necessary through Friendship Centers of Emmet County by calling 231-347-3211, ext. 19.

Winter Weather Policy

If Petoskey Public Schools are closed due to weather, the Petoskey, Pellston, and Huber Centers will be closed and all services will be suspended at all locations. Meals on Wheels will not be delivered on these days.

If Pellston Public Schools are closed due to weather, the Pellston Center will be closed. If Petoskey Schools are open on this day, all other services will be operating as usual.

If either Pellston or Alanson Public Schools are closed due to weather, the Huber (Brutus) Center will be closed. If the Petoskey Schools are open on this day, all other services will be operating as usual.

Save Your Grocery Receipts

We appreciate grocery receipts from Oleson's Markets and D&W Fresh Markets. You may bring receipts into any one of our Centers or mail them to FCEC, 1322 Anderson Road, Petoskey, MI 49770. This is a great way to bring in additional dollars to support our programs.
